2. Who is best suited to Affiliate Marketing?

Many of the characteristics associated with any successful entrepreneur are also an asset with Affiliate Marketing - good organizational skills, persistence, determination, imagination and patience will all help. A measure of technical competence and writing skill will also be an asset although many of these abilities, like any ability, can be learned. One cannot generalize too much but the sort of person who is self-contained and happy in front of the computer may be more likely to succeed and flourish in this work than the person who loves the give and take of the working environment and the social interaction that this brings. For many people, one of the appealing characteristics of this work is that whilst one always has ones clients in mind, one is not necessarily interacting with them at a personal level all the time!

Affiliate Marketing is hard work. Do not go into this expecting quick riches. It requires putting in place a number of different techniques; web design, copy writing, search engine optimisation, product or service research and so on. Moreover, the ground is constantly changing. The search engines may alter the algorithms they use to select sites and pages. New technology will transform the way that business is done and will open up new approaches for us to apply. Companies go out of business; new products come along or become obsolete. Any income we may be earning, may suddenly decline for no apparent reason. There is very little certainty in Affiliate Marketing and it sometimes feels as if we are in a high sea and subject to forces beyond our control. If this lifestyle appeals to you then read on!

Another point to mention is that the beginner in this field is very unlikely to be earning enough to live on for months or years. Whilst Affiliate Marketing is a growing industry at the moment, there is also growing competition. Unless we are in the enviable position of being able to support ourselves and not requiring an immediate income, we would be well advised to begin on a part-time basis. As with many businesses, the best way to start may be alongside our main job. By learning the tricks of the trade in our spare time, we can discover if we like the work. We may also be able to prove that we can earn a living this way. Then, and only then, would it be wise to consider it as a way of life!
