4. What do I need to start Affiliate Marketing?
Compared with most ways of starting up in business, Affiliate Marketing has relatively few set up costs.
However, we will need a computer and an Internet Connection. It is also worth having a separate place for our Affiliate Marketing work. It can be difficult to share this place with other members of the family and it is worth discussing and negotiating with our family for certain periods in the day (or night) when we would prefer not to be disturbed! Those who are in a one-computer family at the moment and can afford to have their own computer just for this business, might be well advised to purchase their own computer. Some people will say that it is more economical on time to have a broadband connection. Others find a dial-up connection perfectly adequate for this kind of work. Whether we choose a dialup connection - and particularly if we choose broadband - it is essential to have a good firewall and virus protection installed. It is also important to have a way of backing up our work regularly; preferably away from your place of work.
Everyone has different levels of technical skill and the software we choose for our business will depend to some extent on our level of skill. For instance, many professional web designers like to use very basic software, such as Notepad, to design their web pages because it enables them to work with the raw html code without interference. In any case, most of us will require office software including a Word Processor, possibly a spreadsheet and a way of writing web pages. We will also need Email software; ideally with the facility to have different personas for each of our affiliate sites. We will also need FTP software. As our Affiliate Marketing business grows, we may wish to invest in further software but in the early stages it is probably wise to stick with the basics until we have built up our knowledge and have a clearer idea of where we wish to take our Affiliate Marketing business. It is best to enjoy the learning process, to spend as little as possible early on and to keep our options open!
