Affiliate Marketing Tutorial:
8. Selling and Affiliate Marketing

Selling in connection with Affiliate Marketing is mainly perhaps a matter of helping our visitors to feel comfortable on our site and in control of the decisions that they make while visiting us. The aim is to empower them to click through from our site in order to buy products or services that will be of use to them. It is unhelpful if they arrive on the recommended site feeling bullied or coerced. The aim is for them to reach the new site in a positive frame of mind; willing to make a purchase if it will be in their interests.

In this connection, it is usually more effective to use text links than banner ads. Text links feel to the reader far more like individual recommendations. We are all resistant in some measure to blatant advertising and less resistant to an objective recommendation included in logical prose.

Everyone has their own style. My approach is to try to build up trust rather than to use any hard sell techniques.

Our tone of voice is important too. No one likes to be lectured. A conversational style, drawing on our own experience where possible, often works best.

It can be effective to give examples, in our own words, of why we consider a product or service worth our reader's attention.

This is easier to achieve if we only recommend products that we consider worthwhile. If we have any doubts at all about a service or product, it is best not to recommend it; or to recommend it with qualifications, drawing attention to any misgivings or drawbacks that we perceive.

Honesty is always the best policy in my view - there is never any need to pretend to be anything other than we are! Visitors will always appreciate our candor and they will be more likely to return in the future as they begin to trust our judgement and feel that we are being straightforward with them.

Needless to say, the best products and services to recommend are those that we have bought ourselves and that we value the most highly.
